Percussion, Guitar, Music Theory, Music Tech and Creative Music Writing
My lessons are student-centred, supportive and adapted to each students’ unique learning style.
A typical lesson
Most lessons are 30 minutes in length. A typical lesson will start with a warmup, progressing to technical exercises that increase facility on the instrument. We spend some time on reading new music and then time on pieces the student enjoys. We usually finish with playing through a full piece or some creative work focusing on expression. We work at the student’s pace, building confidence along the way.
Over time this will build
- a solid foundation of technique
- fluency in music reading and listening whilst playing
- a set list of songs that can be performed
- an ability to harness creativity and expression on the drum kit
My teaching philosophy
From primary school, I have been lucky enough to have musical mentors who are passionate about music and the positive impact it can have. From learning self-discipline to group dynamics, from being one cog in a hundred-piece musical machine to being a soloist, I’ve learnt from the best. And since mid-high school I’ve been passing that passion for music on.
“Joe’s love of music is so infectious, Holly has gotten renewed drive to play and to join in the school’s ensembles”
Adam, parent of Holly (10)
“Ben went from a complete beginner to passing exams and writing his own music, thanks to Joe’s patient, encouraging teaching over 12 years.”
-Jodie, parent of Ben (18)

Why learn percussion?
Physical and mental improvement
Learning percussion boosts physical coordination and mental concentration. Drum kit is one of the only instruments that uses all four limbs, so it’s a skill that uses a unique combination of brain centres.
Confidence for the reserved, nuance for the bold!
Percussion often leads a groups timing, so part of learning is developing confidence which can be great for those more introverted. Conversely, percussion technique requires a degree of nuance, so bolder students will benefit from learning skills of subtlety and dynamics.
Versatility
Percussion sits behind nearly every style of music - from orchestras to EDM, heavy metal to jazz and everything in between. Whilst the basics are the same, students can opt to focus on certain areas, or become broadly adaptable.
Social
Percussionists and drummers get to play in groups, which adds group dynamics to the mix.
