Joe Gould is an accomplished and multi-disciplined musician with a background in orchestral and art music performance.

Joe’s musical story starts at Kellyville Public School, what was then semirural outskirts of Sydney, in the early 90s. The school band conductor heard Joe had started keyboard lessons and took him to the band room. “This is a xylophone,” he said “it’s like a piano, but you get to hit it.” With that explanation, a spark was lit.

Graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2004 with a B.Mus (Performance), Joe has gone on to found The Crooked Fiddle Band - festival favourites around the world, and critically acclaimed for their two albums recorded with cult studio engineer Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Dirty Three). The band’s 2019 album Another Subtle Atom Bomb, co-produced by Joe, was nominated for an ARIA award.

Sparked by a family background in film, Joe has developed a passion for screen composition and collaborating with directors and producers. His stylistic diversity can be seen across moody soundscapes (Let’s Talk About Sects podcast), delicate percussion (Gecko), catchy indie rock (Openair Cinemas TVC) and ethereal strings and brass (Now You See Her).

As an educator, Joe has helped steward hundreds of young musicians towards a life-long love of creativity, from decades of private lessons from ages 5-50. With a Graduate Diploma in Music Education (Instrumental) from WSU, Joe has become a beloved school band and percussion ensemble director across Sydney schools.

Inspired by Conservatorium teacher Richard Milller’s constant self-improvment, in 2025 Joe undertook a trip to Bulgaria to begin studies into a specific regional style of folk drum-kit playing, and is working on returning to learn more firsthand.

Adaptable and communicative, passionate for both originality and a memorable musical experience, Joe is currently working on his third album, and is available to hire for future projects.
